Residential Level 2 EV Charger Installation

A 120-volt outlet will trickle charge overnight. A Level 2 wall unit on a dedicated 240-volt circuit is what most San Jose homeowners want once the car is a daily driver. Executive Electric installs that circuit, mounts the unit, and leaves the cable off the garage floor.

The charger is only half the job. We evaluate existing electrical capacity first. Many 100-amp houses cannot add a 40- or 60-amp circuit without a panel change. If that is your situation, we say so before anyone drills the wall, and we point you to our panel upgrade page for that scope.

Wiring, permits, and inspections are part of the path where the city requires them. Most South Bay cities want a permit for a new EV circuit. We file it and meet the inspector when that applies.

Workplaces and small commercial lots ask for the same hardware on assigned stalls. We treat those as commercial jobs with the same load check and a circuit a property manager can add to later.

Evaluating Existing Electrical Capacity

Before we quote a charger, we look at the panel: amp rating, spare breaker spaces, grounding, and the loads already on the service. A load calculation tells us whether a dedicated Level 2 circuit fits or whether the service is short.

If the panel can take the circuit, the quote is the charger path: homerun, breaker, mount, and permit. If it cannot, we quote a panel upgrade as its own line so you can decide in order. We do not hide one job inside the other.

When a Panel Upgrade Might Be Necessary

A panel upgrade is not automatic with every EV. It is likely when the main is 100 amps or less, the bus is already full, or you are adding charging on top of a heat pump, induction range, or ADU.

It may not be necessary when the service has spare capacity and a clean place for a two-pole breaker. We would rather install only the charger than sell a panel you do not need.

If both jobs are required, the panel work comes first. See our electrical panel upgrades page for how we evaluate that work.

Wiring, Permits, and Inspection

Dedicated 240-volt circuit

New homerun from the panel to the garage, carport, or parking stall, with the correct breaker, wire gauge, and disconnect where code requires it.

Wall unit mounting

Hardwired or plug-in Level 2 units get a solid mount, conduit that matches the wall, and cable management so the cord is not on the floor.

Permits where applicable

Most South Bay cities require a permit for a new EV circuit. We file it. If a city does not, we still install to code.

Inspections where applicable

When the city inspects, we meet the inspector. You leave with a working charger and a labeled breaker.

Outdoor and carport installs

Weather-rated hardware, proper clearances, and routing that keeps the cable off driveways and walkways.

Workplace charging

Assigned stalls, simple signage, and circuits a property manager can extend later without reopening the wall.

EV Charger Installation Process

  1. 01

Confirm the vehicle and parking spot

We ask which charger you have or prefer, where the car parks, and whether the panel is in the garage or on an outside wall.

  2. 02

    Check the panel

If the service can take the circuit, we schedule the install. If it cannot, we quote a panel upgrade first.

  3. 03

Run the circuit and mount the unit

Conduit and wire go in, the unit is mounted, and we test a charge cycle when the vehicle is on site.

  4. 04

    Inspection when required

The city signs the sticker if a permit was part of the job. You get a labeled breaker either way.

When a Level 2 Charger Makes Sense

  • check Overnight 120-volt charging is not keeping up with a daily commute.
  • check You bought an EV and the mobile connector is too slow for how you drive.
  • check You want the charger on a dedicated circuit instead of a shared dryer outlet.
  • check A second car is going electric and the first charger cannot cover both.
  • check You are finishing a garage or ADU and want the circuit in before drywall closes.
  • check A workplace wants two or three assigned stalls without a full charging island.

Questions About EV Charger Installation in San Jose

Do I need a panel upgrade to add an EV charger?

Sometimes. We calculate the load. If the panel can take a dedicated Level 2 circuit, we install only the charger. If it cannot, we quote panel work separately. Read more on our panel upgrades page.

How long does installation take?

A straightforward garage install is usually a few hours once any permit is issued. A panel upgrade is a separate visit.

Do you publish charger prices on the website?

No. Cost depends on panel capacity, circuit length, indoor versus outdoor mounting, and permit requirements. We quote after we see the site.

Do apartments or condos qualify?

If you have assigned parking and the owner or HOA approves the circuit path, we can quote it. Shared lots sometimes need a different scope.

Is a permit always required?

Most South Bay cities require one for a new 240-volt EV circuit. We handle the paperwork where it applies.

Ready for a Level 2 charger at home?

Tell us the vehicle, parking spot, and panel location. We will confirm whether the service can take the circuit and send a quote.
